The Chesapeake Affair of 1807
An unknown number of Americans were pressed into the Royal Navy however, while Britain was at war with France and some of their ships had to take repairs, 3 Americans,William Ware, Daniel Martin, and John Strachan, and 1 British sailor, Jenkins Ratford, escaped. They enlisted themselves on the Chesapeake cruise, the British knew this and when Chesapeake set out to sea they demanded they sent over the 4 escapes but when the commodore, James Barron, aboard the ship saw these men were American he refused and the British attacked in close range. The Chesapeake was unprepared so Barron had no choice but to let the British onto the ship and take the 3 prisoner Americans, Ratford had not been found by Barron, and afterwards Barron sent out to Norfolk to tell what happened.
The Embargo Act was put into place by congress and during Jefferson's presidency to stop all trade with Britain for all the mistreatment and rules broken by them. However, the Embargo actually hurt American more than hurting the Britain and it was difficult enforcing the law upon the people
